Pro Confederation Speech

 

Today our goal is to provide more information, in order to show how beneficial confederation would be to the maritime colonies. We realize your main concern is autonomy. However, we believe that if you join the confederation it will only strengthen your autonomy, not take it away. To the colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, there would be many benefits. Firstly, would be the protection we would provide from the expansion of the United States. Secondly, it will improve your economy by providing a larger market for your goods. Finally, it will provide a link to the other colonies through the inter-colonial railway. To Prince Edward Island we promise to clear all the debt you have accumulated and give you back your land from absentee landlords. Some are concerned with the issue of regional equality. To them, we would say that just because you are a smaller province, that does not mean you will not be represented equally. You will have the same amount of seats as Ottawa and Quebec. These are the reasons that the Maritimes should join the confederation.
